Two children's rooms in one apartment: a shared language, two different characters. An arch motif ties wardrobe, shelving and bed together.

The constraint
Furniture for a child's room ages in two directions at once: the child grows and taste changes. Making it entirely neutral leaves the room characterless; committing it fully to a theme guarantees it will be torn out in a few years.

The decision
Character was reduced to a single geometric motif: the arch. It repeats on the wardrobe front, on the shelving unit and at the head of the bed — while the carcass itself stays a neutral matt lacquer. Colour was used only on surfaces that can be changed; take the fronts off and repaint them and the room turns over while the furniture stays.

What it resolves
The two rooms are alike enough to read as one family and different enough not to be copies. Because the coloured surfaces are independent of the carcass, only the fronts need renewing later.
Materials in this frame
- Walnut VeneerDark, warm and strongly figured. It reads strongest when it is used sparingly.
- Matt LacquerSprayed over primed and sanded MDF. It does not hold fingerprints and it does not throw light.
- Bar PullA straight bar mounted on the face. The one piece of hardware a hand actually holds; its length follows the hand.
- Timber EdgeA solid timber lipping on the board edge. It protects the exposed corner and hides the joint.
